Facilitating effective Meetings

The word “facilitation” comes from the Latin root word facilis which means “easy to do, easy, doable”.  As a Business Analyst, we need to be good at running meetings which is different than facilitating meetings.  We need to make it easy for people to participate, keep on task, identify ideas, prioritize them, and come to thoughtful conclusions.  It comes down to the skill of “effectively mining group knowledge," which involves an array of techniques to do effectively.

This month's presentation focuses on showing tips and tricks, with plenty of real world examples, to see how this is done in a system development environment.  The techniques shown can be scaled up or down to extract what you need from participants. We sometimes say “The business doesn’t know what it wants” but it’s better to say “The business cannot easily identify what it needs” and your job is to help them do that.
